The training is required to equip staff with the knowledge, skills, and awareness to (a) anticipate risks and prevent the potential for conflict and aggression where possible, (b) to intervene when appropriate and effectively deal with 'challenging' situations and people, always working to resolve incidents and issues when they arise, with the least amount of harm and distress to themselves, their colleagues and others who may be affected, but also (c) to recognise when personal safety considerations are paramount and when disengagement is necessary and appropriate.
