Summary of the contracting process

The National Trust for Scotland is procuring conservation work at Brodick Castle and Country Park on the Isle of Arran. The contract is divided into two lots: replacing defective stock fencing in two fields, including damaged posts, strainers, wire and fittings, and controlling invasive Rhododendron ponticum in semi-natural woodland by stem injection. Fence replacement is intended to maintain secure livestock enclosures so conservation grazing can continue to support grassland habitats and the landscape’s historic character. Rhododendron control is part of the Trust’s programme to contain and ultimately eradicate the plant, which threatens woodland biodiversity and can host plant diseases affecting native and garden trees and shrubs. Suppliers may bid for either or both lots.

The buyer invited offers through an open procedure. The tender deadline was 2 November 2026 at 12 noon, with bids submitted electronically; the bid opening was set for the same time. The contract period is 25 days for each lot. The procurement is split between fencing replacement and rhododendron stem-injection control, and suppliers may bid for both. The buyer does not allow variant bids. Evaluation is based on suitability criteria, with selection requirements set out in the tender documents. The recorded contract terms provide for electronic payment and ordering, and allow electronic invoicing. No monetary estimate is stated in the procurement information provided.

The opportunity suits contractors able to deliver practical estate conservation work in a country park setting. Fencing specialists with experience replacing stock fencing, posts, strainers, wire and associated fittings can compete for the fencing lot; the requirement allows serviceable existing materials to be retained where appropriate. Vegetation-management and invasive-species contractors with the capability to carry out stem injection treatment of Rhododendron ponticum may suit the woodland-control lot. The work contributes to ongoing habitat and landscape management, including supporting conservation grazing and protecting semi-natural woodland. Staff names and qualifications must be provided, and the tender documents set out the suitability requirements. Bidders should be able to complete their chosen work within the specified short contract period.

Brodick Country Park Conservation Works

Notice Description

This tender comprises of two lots: Lot 1 - Stock Fence Replacement Replacement of defective sections of stock fencing within two fields in the Castle Parks are required to maintain secure livestock enclosures and support the continued use of conservation grazing as part of the management of the parkland grasslands. Grazing helps maintain the open character of the fields, manage vegetation structure, limit scrub encroachment and contribute to a varied grassland habitat, while retaining the historic pastoral character of the designed landscape. Works will include the replacement of damaged fence sections, posts, strainers, wire and associated fittings as required, with existing serviceable materials retained where appropriate. Lot 2 - Stem Injection Control for Rhododendron Ponticum Rhododendron (R. ponticum) is a highly invasive non-native species which has colonised semi-natural woodland throughout areas of Brodick Country Park. The plant was introduced to Brodick Castle Gardens as an ornamental species during Victorian times, when it was also planted in shelter belts and as game cover on the wider estate. Over time, R. ponticum has spread from these original plantings, infesting semi-natural woodland and threatening these areas' biodiversity. There is concern that Phytophthora kernoviae (or P. ramorum, currently present on the island) may return to the grounds and threaten the health of native as well as horticultural trees and shrubs, emphasising the high importance of controlling rhododendron, one of its main host species, in the wider estate. This contract forms part of the National Trust for Scotland's ongoing programme to control and ultimately eradicate rhododendron (Rhododendron ponticum) from Brodick Country Park.
