Notice Title

Collections Online 2.0 Scoping

Notice Description

The Science Museum Group's online collection will be five years old in December 2021. In half a decade, the site has undergone continuous enhancements, including the addition of new features like deep zoom, 3D object scans, video and audio players. The quantity of digitised objects has expanded rapidly, with One Collection delivering the vast majority of new records and images. From a base of 5% of the collection online with an image, we reached 35% in November 2021, and the work outlined below should take us to 63% by 2023. The audience for the online collection is also growing, with visits now exceeding 100,000 each month. In response to the growth in content and users, the next phase of Collections Online must focus on improving user experience: exploration, search and discovery, while the One Collection digitisation programme continues to add breadth. This project must also consider the longer-term roadmap for online collections (archive digitisation, born digital collections, etc.) and will establish foundations for these initiatives in the decade ahead.
