Summary of the contracting process

The public procurement process conducted by The Common Services Agency, also known as NHS National Services Scotland (NSS), involves the purchasing of orthotic consumables, including various medical support products such as knee braces, walker footwear, and gripper socks. This procurement is intended for all NHS Scotland Health Boards and associated authorities, operating under the NHS (Scotland) and Public Bodies (Joint Working) Scotland Acts. The procurement process employs an open procedure, seeking to finalise supply contracts through a framework agreement anticipated to last 48 months, with no extension option available. Key procurement activities started as early as 2025 with the planning phase, and the most recent award decisions concluded by May 2026, with contract signings occurring around 22 May 2026, at locations across Scotland (UKM). This process follows a structured framework encompassing categories like medical consumables and orthopaedic supplies, reflecting a comprehensive approach to healthcare-related goods acquisition.

This procurement offers significant opportunities for business growth, particularly for suppliers specialising in medical consumables and orthopaedic support products. The contracts have been awarded under a multi-supplier framework, allowing various suppliers to participate, which can increase market engagement and competition. This environment is ideal for companies looking to expand their footprint within the healthcare industry, particularly small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the UK. Suppliers are considered based on sustainability practices, product quality, and pricing competitiveness, fostering an encouraging environment for companies prioritising eco-friendly and high-quality production processes. Such contracts can enhance business visibility and relationship-building within the public healthcare sector, setting a foundation for future procurement opportunities.
