Waste Management
Notice Description
Thames Water is the UK's largest water and wastewater service company. Every day we supply around 2,600 million litres of tap water to 9 million customers across London and the Thames Valley. We also remove and treat more than 4 billion litres of sewage for 16 million customers. In everything we do, we follow Thames Water's purpose and values. Our operations generate significant volumes of waste, particularly material and grit removed from customer and council wastewater. This represents the largest waste stream across our sites, and recycling is prioritised wherever possible over landfill. At Beckton Sewage Treatment Works in Barking, London-one of our largest sites-we operate an incinerator to process biowaste. This produces ash as a by-product, which is currently collected and all ash collected from the silos is recycled. In addition, our sites generate construction waste, recyclables, metals and hazardous materials, all of which require reliable collection and safe disposal to ensure continuous operations. We are seeking dependable, innovative partners to support approximately 150 sites, keeping them running efficiently while developing alternative re use solutions to minimise landfill dependency. To ensure all waste streams are fully serviced, we have implemented the lotting structure set out below: * Lot 1a - Screenings & Grit (Grab-Lorry) * Estimated annual volumes: 19,500 - 23,500 tonnes * Lot 1b - Screenings & Grit (Skips) * Estimated annual volumes: 11,000 - 15,000 tonnes * Lot 2 - Ash * Estimated annual volumes: 4,500 - 5,000 tonnes * Lot 3a - Metals * Estimated annual volumes: 500 - 700 tonnes * Lot 3b - Hazardous * Estimated annual volumes: 120-150 tonnes * Lot 3c - Multi-Waste * Estimated annual volumes: 5000-5500 tonnes Please note: There will be no limit on the number of lots a supplier may be awarded. Thames Water reserves the right to refine the award criteria. Please note that that deadline for asking for access to the PSQ & submitting of the PSQ is 28th August, 2026 at 12 noon.
Lot Information
Screenings and Grit (Grab Lorry)
The scope of this lot is for waste management services for screenings and grit at Thames Water operational sites, using a grab lorry model for waste collection. Services include: * Provision of waste containers * Collection of screenings, through grab lorry removal of screenings from skips * Collection of grit, through grab lorry removal of grit from skips * Haulage of screenings * Haulage of grit * Re-use, recycling, recovery and/or disposal of screenings * Re-use, recycling, recovery and/or disposal of grit Please note: Consideration for this lot is limited to suppliers able to deliver a viable grit recycling service. Emphasis placed on the recycling (or landfill diversion) of grit, with suppliers expected to provide washing/treatment and recycling facilities either in house or as a subcontracted service. Estimated number of sites serviced: 48-78. Estimated volume of screenings and grit waste per year for these sites: 19,500 - 23,700 tonnes. Collections are usually at agreed frequencies, with some ad-hoc callouts required. This work in this lot will be split between two awarded suppliers, who will share the work through the contract duration. Work will be split between awarded suppliers on a site-by-site basis, accounting for geography and any directly relevant considerations. The details of this process are set out in the supporting legal documentation within this tender process. Thames Water retains to right to re-allocate individual site ownership between awarded suppliers within this lot based on key performance mechanisms measured throughout the term of this agreement. The performance mechanisms will be released alongside the tender documentation. Range given for annual tonnage, as some number of sites currently using skip collections will transfer to grab lorry collections (increasing annual tonnage). For a full detailed description of services required under this lot, please see the work specification tender documents.
Renewal: Thames Water envisages that the contract will be awarded for an initial term of 5 years with options to extend by 1 year or longer, up to a maximum overall term of 8 years

Services include: * Provision of waste containers * Collection of screenings, through removal of screenings skips * Collection of grit, through removal of grit skips * Haulage of screenings * Haulage of grit * Re-use, recycle, recovery and/or disposal of screenings * Re-use, recycle, recovery and/or disposal of grit Please note: Consideration for this lot is limited to suppliers able to deliver a viable grit recycling service. Emphasis placed on the recycling (or landfill diversion) of grit, with suppliers expected to provide washing/treatment and recycling facilities either in house or as a subcontracted service. Estimated number of sites serviced: 50-83. Estimated volume of screenings and grit waste per year for these sites: 11,000 - 15,100 tonnes. Range given for annual tonnage, as some sites currently using skip collections may transfer to grab lorry collections. For a full detailed description of services required under this lot, please see the work specification tender documents.
Renewal: Thames Water envisages that the contract will be awarded for an initial term of 5 years with options to extend by 1 year or longer, up to a maximum overall term of 8 years
AshThe scope of this lot focuses on the collection and recycling of incinerator ash waste produced at Beckton Sewage Treatment Works, Barking, London, IG11 0AD. Services include, but are not limited to: * Provision of waste containers * Collection of Ash product from the incinerator * Haulage of Ash * Re-use, recycle recovery and/or disposal of ash Ash will usually be collected regularly, with collection frequency in line with ash production. Thames Water expects 100% of ash waste to be diverted from landfill through re-use, recycling or repurposing initiatives. Proposals should show 100% recycling rates for suitable ash (i.e. there are concessions if ash output is contaminated and hazardous) Estimated ash tonnage per year: 4,500 - 5,000 tonnes. Thames Water are looking to award one supplier for this lot. This supplier may work with a third party to cover services such as the collection and haulage of ash, if they specialise only in recycling and repurposing the product. For a full detailed description of services required under this lot, please see the work specification tender documents.
Renewal: Thames Water envisages that the contract will be awarded for an initial term of 5 years with options to extend by 1 year or longer, up to a maximum overall term of 8 years
MetalsThe scope of this lot is for waste management services for metal waste generated at Thames Water operational sites. This waste may contain a mixture of types and grades of metal from different sources. Services include, but are not limited to: * Provision of waste containers * Collection of metals * Haulage of metals * Re-use, sale, recovery and/or (as a last resort) disposal of metals Collections may be required on any of Thames Water's operational sites across the whole Thames Water estate (London, Home Counties and Thames Valley). Thames Water expects the maximal possible amount of metal waste to be diverted from landfill through re-use, recycling or repurposing initiatives. Thames Water should receive the full amount of revenue from any metal that is sold. Yearly tonnage depends on individual projects and works being undertaken. An indicative estimate of yearly metal waste: 500 - 700 tonnes. Thames Water intends to award one supplier for this lot. For a full detailed description of services required under this lot, please see the work specification tender documents.
Renewal: Thames Water envisages that the contract will be awarded for an initial term of 5 years with options to extend by 1 year or longer, up to a maximum overall term of 8 years

For a full detailed description of services required under this lot, please see the work specification tender documents.",
