Summary of the contracting process

Ordnance Survey Limited, the national mapping agency for Great Britain, is initiating a procurement process titled "Remote Sensed Data - Aircraft, Sensors & Software - RFI2." This process falls under the goods category and primarily focuses on acquiring capabilities for aerial data capture. The key industry classifications include aircraft, image-processing software, and sensors. Located in Southampton, the purchasing entity is currently in the planning stage of the procurement, with a market engagement exercise open until 28th August 2026. Potential suppliers can access the response documents and procurement information via the Ordnance Survey In-tend portal.

This tender represents a significant opportunity for businesses offering aircraft, sensors, and image-processing software, particularly those with innovative solutions for data capture technology. SMEs are especially encouraged to participate, as the procurement process is suitable for smaller enterprises. Companies that can provide leasing or rental solutions for aerial equipment and software, or who offer comprehensive sensor and aircraft packages, stand to benefit. By engaging in this process, businesses can potentially establish long-term relationships with Ordnance Survey and contribute to national-scale mapping initiatives.

Notice Title

Remote Sensed Data - Aircraft, Sensors & Software - RFI2

Notice Description

As Great Britain's national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey is responsible for capturing and maintaining the National Map of Great Britain. This is supported by a range of operational capabilities and technologies, including national-scale programmes for sensed data capture and processing. Ordnance Survey currently undertakes its own sensed data capture through cyclical and targeted flying programmes. The imagery collected supports production processes, helping to update and enhance the National Map. The imagery is also incorporated directly into the OS MasterMap Imagery Layer and used in the creation and derivation of a range of OS products. Ordnance Survey is seeking to enhance its sensed data capture capability to meet future customer needs. It therefore wishes to understand market capability to deliver remote sensed data from additional and alternative sensors. Ordnance Survey is considering two approaches and is releasing two Requests for Information (RFI); one for remote sensed data provisions (this RFI), the second to obtain options for acquiring aircraft, sensors and software for continued aerial acquisition as an in-house activity. The scope of this RFI is the provision of aircraft, sensors and software to support Ordnance Survey's aerial data capture requirements. Respondents are invited to describe how their capabilities and solutions could meet the requirements outlined within the RFI documentation and to propose appropriate delivery options. Options may include, but are not limited to: * The leasing of aircraft and provision of flying services to Ordnance Survey; * The leasing or rental of sensors and/or software to Ordnance Survey; * The purchase of sensors and/or software by Ordnance Survey.
