Summary of the contracting process

The Met Office is seeking a managed communications solution for its land observation network of around 300 automatic weather stations, mainly in the UK with a small number overseas. The service must transfer land-surface weather observation data from site loggers to the Met Office’s central cloud-based collection system in real time, every minute. The requirement includes communications equipment and data services, supporting stations with different power arrangements: some have mains power, while others use 50W solar panels. Most stations use 4G connectivity, but some currently rely on 2G. Delivery covers the United Kingdom, with the network also including a small overseas presence. We operate a network of around 300 automatic weather stations (AWS), mostly in the UK, but also a small number overseas. The weather observation data collected at these sites is collated on a logger at site and then communicated every minute to our central cloud based system in real time. Some sites have mains power, some operate on a 50W solar panel. The majority of sites have 4G connectivity, but there are a subset that only have 2G connectivity at present. We are looking for a supplier to provide a communications solution to allow for the real time transfer of our land surface observation data to our central cloud based collection system every minute in real time.
