Summary of the contracting process

Cell & Gene Therapy Catapult is buying and installing biopharmaceutical production equipment for its site in Braintree, Essex. The requirement is split into two lots: a fully automated multi-column continuous chromatography system, with servicing, repairs, maintenance, training and consumables; and an automated viral inactivation hardware system. The chromatography equipment uses interconnected columns to improve use of the chromatography resin or membrane, typically for capture chromatography. The viral inactivation system must handle controlled mixing, pH measurement and adjustment, batch control, GMP batch data capture, product vessel volume or mass monitoring, and temperature control and monitoring. This is a purchase of laboratory and medical equipment, with associated services.

The buyer invited offers through an open procedure. The tender set a deadline for questions of 3 November 2026 at 5pm and a bid submission deadline of 17 November 2026 at noon. The stated award decision date was 30 November 2026. The contract period for both lots is scheduled to run from 15 December 2026 to 14 December 2028, with renewal options described as 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 years, up to the stated maximum end date in December 2031. Each lot has an estimated value of £800,000 gross. Bids are evaluated on quality, weighted at 60%, and price, weighted at 40%. The lots are separately described, and small and medium-sized enterprises are considered suitable to participate.

This opportunity suits suppliers of automated bioprocessing and biopharmaceutical production equipment, particularly firms able to provide integrated systems alongside installation and ongoing technical support. For the chromatography lot, relevant capability includes multi-column continuous chromatography and understanding of capture applications and resin or membrane utilisation; suppliers should also be able to provide maintenance, repair, training and consumables. For the viral inactivation lot, the system must integrate controlled mixing, pH sensing and dosing, programmable batch execution, GMP data capture, vessel volume or mass measurement, and product temperature control and monitoring. Suppliers with experience delivering equipment for biopharmaceutical manufacturing and supporting its operation would be well placed. Both lots are presented as suitable for SMEs, and the quality-led evaluation gives technical performance substantial weight alongside price. The lots allow suppliers to focus on either equipment requirement.”】【final_uncertainty?】
