Summary of the contracting process

Cell & Gene Therapy Catapult is buying and installing equipment for biopharmaceutical production at its Braintree, Essex site. The procurement is divided into two lots: a fully automated multi-column continuous chromatography system, with servicing, repairs, maintenance, training and consumables; and an automated viral inactivation hardware system. The chromatography system uses interconnected columns to improve use of the chromatography resin or membrane, and can be used for capture chromatography. The viral inactivation system must support controlled mixing, pH measurement and adjustment, batch control and GMP batch data capture, as well as product volume or mass monitoring and temperature control and monitoring. The purchase is for laboratory and medical equipment, with associated support services.

The buyer invited offers through an open procedure. The procurement is at the tender stage. Suppliers could submit bids electronically in English. Questions were due by 3 November 2026 at 17:00, and bids by 17 November 2026 at 12:00. The award decision was due by 30 November 2026. The stated total estimated value is £1.6 million including VAT, split equally between the two lots at £800,000 each. Both lots have a planned contract period from 15 December 2026 to 14 December 2028, with renewal options described as 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 years and a maximum possible extent into December 2031. Each lot is evaluated on quality, weighted 60%, and price, weighted 40%.

This opportunity suits suppliers able to deliver and install specialised process equipment for biopharmaceutical production, with capabilities in chromatography or viral inactivation. The chromatography lot is relevant to firms with experience designing or supplying automated multi-column systems and supporting their operation through servicing, repair, maintenance, training and consumables. The viral inactivation lot calls for equipment integrating process controls, pH measurement and dosing, batch execution software or an HMI, GMP batch data capture, vessel load monitoring, and product temperature control and monitoring. Suppliers should be able to demonstrate that their systems can address the full set of functional requirements and provide the related support. Small and medium-sized businesses are identified as suitable bidders for both lots.
