Summary of the contracting process

The Science Museum Group issued a tender titled "Operation Ouch! Senses Temporary Exhibition 2D and 3D Design (or Design and Build)" focusing on museum-exhibition services. The procurement, initially started as a tender, has reached the award stage. The estimated project value ranges are £50,000 - £60,000 for design and approximately £350,000 for the build. Based in London, this procurement has already been completed, with the contract period starting on 26th June 2024 and ending on 28th February 2025. The procurement process was conducted under an open procedure, offering opportunities for both Design and Build firms. Notably, SME participation was encouraged, but opportunities for VCSEs were not highlighted.

This tender represents a valuable opportunity for businesses involved in museum services, exhibition design, and construction work. The Science Museum Group, well-known for spearheading innovative exhibition solutions, is an attractive client and could provide significant exposure and portfolio enhancement for the winning bidder. SMEs specialising in museum construction and exhibition design would find this project particularly suitable, as the tender not only offered a fair competition environment but also highlighted non-preferential treatment between purely design and design-and-build firms. This opens doors for designers looking to expand their scope to museums and other thematic exhibitions.

Notice Title

Operation Ouch! Senses Temporary Exhibition 2D and 3D Design (or Design and Build) - AWARD

Notice Description

The Science and Industry Museum (SIM) is devoted to inspiring our visitors through ideas that change the world, from the industrial revolution to today and beyond. Our vision is to be a world-leading, inspirational museum about the potential of science and industry to change our lives. It's a story that we're uniquely placed to tell - on the site of the oldest surviving passenger railway station, in the heart of the world's first industrial city, today alive with innovative discoveries in science and technology. In our new Special Exhibitions Gallery, we schedule major temporary exhibitions and Operation Ouch! Senses will form part of this programme. The purpose of this tendering exercise is to appoint a Designer at minimum, while opening the tender opportunity to Design and Build companies should they wish to submit. As mentioned in the introduction, the Build portion of the tender is not scored, showing that Design and Build companies will not gain preferential treatment over Design only tenderers. The estimate value of Design is PS50,000 - PS60,000 and the estimate value of Build is PS350,000.
